In the beginning
of May 2003 in the region of Surkhabat, we distributed 7,500 apple and
apricot trees and 20,000 seedlings of acacia and willows for villagers
to plant them by themselves.
We procured apple and apricot seedlings from the Agricultural
Experiment Center under the Agricultural Ministry of Afghanistan with
the price of 25 AF per one seedling-one third of the going price. We
have mainly gathered varieties of acacia and willows that are resistant
to climate of high land from the area of Gilgit. However, a large number of
seedlings died during the transportation. It was quite difficult
to deliver seedlings from remote places taking days of time.
There are two aims of the Green
Project-
1) Raise the moisture level
in the soil by forestation,
2) Make the environment where we can harvest
more fruits and solve the continuing problem of vitamin shortage among
villagers by letting them eat these fruits.
