VIOLATIONS IN 2003

Union members persecuted:

Throughout the year members of the Japan Confederation of Railway Workers' Union (JRU) were intimidated and harassed by police. The saga of the seven union members, who had been arrested in November 2002, continued until October. They had been arrested owing to their trade union-related activities at their workplace. They remained in custody for 11 months and were allowed no visitors other than their lawyers. In October, they were finally granted bail.

In the meantime, other union officers had their houses searched on June 12 and union buildings were too. On September 3 and 4, the police conducted searches at 58 places, including the Japan Railway East Trade Union (JREU), which belongs to the JRU, and union officers' homes. 1172 items were confiscated.
