The Japanese and Korean Workers' Joint Symposium on Railway Safety was held in Taegu

Our member visited Taegu-city, Korea on 16 - 19 February to commemorate the first anniversary of subway fire accident which occurred on 18 February 2003, and to attend 'the Japan and Korea Joint Symposium on Railway Safety'.

On February 17, the Japanese and Korean joint symposium on railway safety was held under the auspices of  JRU, Korean Federation of Transportation, Public & Social Services Workers' Unions (KPSU) and International Center for Labor Solidarity (ICLS).

Members from Korea reported about the struggle of Taegu subway union, and mentioned that: Although one year has passed since the accident, there is no improvements in equipment and no safety education for workers: The authority of Taegu city cleaned up the scene soon after the accident for destruction of evidence and has not taken any responsibilities: It has been broadcasted that the big accident was occurred by the crew. That is completely wrong.

In fact, the crew and command office workers were sentenced to 2 - 5 years in prison. Only workers were forced to take responsibilities for the accident. A member remarked necessity to consider calling on international workers about this issue.

In the end of the symposium, "the Joint Statement of Japanese and Korean Workers' Symposium on Railway Safety" was made, and all members agreed to share common problems on railway safety and strengthen solidarity.
