JRU was founded on February 2th 1987 just before Japan Railway Corporation (JR) started after the privatization of Japan National Railways. Since then, we have aimed for improvement of workers' condition and sound progress of JR. JRU consists of 11 unions and 62,300 members.
We have been also working on railway safety issues, and checking the policy of each JR for improvement of safety condition. In autumn 1990, JRU held International Railway Safety Trade Union Conference, calling for our policy "Do not pursue responsibilities but investigate causes".
JRU has been contributing greatly to regional solidarities and international exchanges, such as free train trips to disabled people, construction of elementary schools in China, and supporting people in Afghanistan through JRU Kabul office established in May 2002.
We sustain good working condition and improve economical and social position
We will understand our mission as railway workers and workers of the related companies, and train our skill and personalities for JR group's prosperity.
For unification and growth of labor movement in Japan, we will strengthen our solidarity, mobilize all our workers, and do not allow political parties to control and intervene us, and we work for union members' benefit based on the trade union principle.
We will respect individuals and lead the people to fair, equal, and peaceful society abided by the Constitution of Japan.
